The 2024-2025 Lanett High School Teacher of the Year is Trentavious McCants.
Coach McCants, affectionately known as “Coach Tay” to many, serves as the physical education teacher at Lanett High School. He began his career with Lanett City Schools in 2015 as the CHOICES Behavior Specialist for our in-school suspension and alternative school program. In 2019, he assumed the role of physical education teacher.
In addition to his role as teacher, he is also the head varsity boys basketball coach for the Mighty Lanett Panthers.
Coach McCants pursued his collegiate studies at the University of North Alabama (UNA), graduating with a degree in business management. During his tenure at UNA, he was a member of the basketball team and FCA, which afforded him the opportunity to serve the community in various capacities. He attributes his involvement in these organizations as the catalyst for his desire to impact the lives of others in a positive way.
When asked to share his teaching philosophy, Coach McCants notes that “all students are capable of learning, achieving goals, and meeting their full potential in an educational environment where they feel protected and unpretentious. In physical education, I aim to create trusting relationships and safe environments where my students can grow physically, mentally, and socially. I accommodate the different learning styles of my students by incorporating individual work, hands-on activities, and team building activities in which students are able to showcase their skills and strengths amongst their peers. Daily, I continually work towards being the one who helps inspire the skills and values in students that will leave an impact on them for a lifetime”.
Coach McCants boasts of his passion to motivate his students and athletes in the classroom and on the court. He also prides himself in his efforts to be a positive influence in the local community.
He is happily married to Breeana McCants and the father of three children Triniti, Taylin, and Trenton.
Congratulations Coach McCants. We are blessed to have you as a part of our Panther family!
